Prompt: Travel. How did you travel in 2010? How and/or where would you like to travel next year?
Short and sweet: This year I traveled to beautiful Guelph to visit family of my husband’s and to Toronto to see David Mitchell speak. Going west and leaving Ottawa was a good feeling, even though I didn’t go far. Even just to stay at a hotel downtown after Canada Day was perspective-adjusting. I like leaving home and I like coming back afterward.
Next year, I anticipate a visit to Winnipeg once the weather’s better to see my in-laws, and more short weekends away—Montreal or Quebec City, maybe Toronto again. Canada Day we’ll be downtown in the heart of it again, and we might also do a night in the city depending on what the National Arts Centre has lined up next fall. There is also the ghost of a chance that we might spend our anniversary at the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake. It’s a Cat on a Hot Tin Roof year, and that’s going to be as sweet as sugar pie if it happens. Can’t cross my fingers too hard for that one.
Outside of that, big travel is off the menu for next year. Myron has a conference to attend, and it’s just not the time, plus I foresee another house expense that would put a dent in a travel budget, too. It’s really a privilege to live near so many interesting places, and I like to think I can work the heck out of them the same way I would if I went somewhere far away. Travel’s about new eyes, after all, and I have those every time I walk out my door.
